Second Chance 9

“Whoa!” Box yells out in surprise as he walks into the house and sees Marshall sitting on the bottom step holding a rugrat.

“WOW! A Giant!” Madison excitedly comments, glancing up at the very large man.

“Instead of making breakfast! You made a rugrat!” Box jokily comments, as he walks past them heading for the kitchen.

“His Name Is Madison!” Marshall firmly states, as he follows Box to the kitchen, carrying Madison on his hip.

“Yeah! My name is Madison! Not Rugrat!” Madison states.

Box begins taking the groceries out of the bags, but suddenly stops when he glances over, and the child is babbling to Marshall who’s intensely listening, and notices how much the child looks like Marshall.

“I’ve never seen a really Giant! Do you know anymore? Mommy read me a book one time. It had a Giant in it and a boy named Jack. Jack had these magic beans that grew this tall stalk thing. It was so tall that it touched the sky and he climbed up it, and that’s where the giant lived with this music thing. The giant got mad cause Jack didn’t knock, so Jack ran back down the stalk thing and cut it down.” Madison excitedly explains to Marshall, but stops as Marshall glances up at the Giant.

Marshall is there something I should know.” Box states, as Marshall is not even aware that he’s even spoken.

Marshall!” Box firmly states as he walks over to Marshall and places his hand on his arm.

“What?” Marshall agitatedly asks, as he glances at Box, then turns his attention back to Madison, who has quickly grabbed tightly with his little hands the medallion with his right and the front of his t-shirt with his left.

“Don’t make him MAD!” Madison seriously states in a sleepily tone, as he glances up at Marshall with sleepy eyes, but some how knowing Marshall would never let the giant hurt him.

“Please tell me I haven’t walked into something that maybe Paul should be here for.” Box struggles to asks, knowing Marshall has been more than a boss the last five years, but this is way out of his league.

“Who’s Paul? . . . . . . . . .  Is he another Giant?” Madison asks in a sleepily tone then yawns.

“How far away is Cancun? I’ve heard the water there is really blue.” Marshall comments, as he continues to hold onto Madison tightly as he looks in the refrigerator for a drink for him.

“You feel a lot like Mommy.” Madison sleepily mumbles, as he rests his little head on Marshall’s chest.

“Where’s Carly?” Box urgently asks in concern, as he takes the Capri Sun from Marshall and pokes the straw in and starts to hand it back, as Marshall is taking several deep breathe from Madison laying his little head down on his chest, as he continues to hold onto the medallion.

“I not sleepy . . .” Madison sleepily says as he tries to force his eyes to stay open, but the comfort of Marshall’s arms makes it very hard.

“Maybe we need a cup . . . or something.” Marshall struggles to say, as Box looks at them then begins to search frantically through the cabinets and then switches the juice over to a sippy cup, and hands it back to Marshall, who hands it to Madison who’s very happy when he sees the cup.

“Thank you.” Madison sincerely says as he takes the cup, and then takes a drink.

“I need you to go back to the hotel . . . . call Paul . . . . . I need . . . . . . . . . .  Never mind. Just go to the hotel! I’ll call you if I leave here. I promise! This is between Carly and me. I need to talk to her alone. Just me.” Marshall says, totally confused just wanting to take the easy way out and leaving the country, with Madison and letting Paul make everything okay, but his love for Carly forces himself to think rationally.

“I’m going to put him down for his nap . . . then wake Carly.” Marshall sincerely says, and then places a kiss on the top of Madison head, which is falling asleep in his arms.

“I not sleepy . . . .” Madison tires to say as he is falling asleep.

“I’m sorry Marshall I can’t leave you here alone.” Box sincerely says, whishing Paul or Proof was here.

“You can’t stay here! . . . Go visit Dru! Just Go!” Marshall whispers trying to keep his cool, but knowing Box is only doing his job.

“Alright! I’ll Be In The Driveway! I’ll be back in an hour. Knocking very loudly!” Box whispers, but getting his point across.

“Okay. One hour.” Marshall aggresses in a whisper, knowing that is the best compromise he’s going to get.

Box slowly leaves, cussing himself for leaving but quickly gets in the car and dials Proof’s number, as Marshall carefully goes to the nursery with a sleeping Madison in his arms.

“I Love You . . . . and I’m so sorry . . . .  I’ve always loved your mommy . . . . . . .  and I always will . . . . she’s the only one that’s made my live normal.” Marshall softly whispers, as he places Madison sleeping body in the crib with a kiss on his cheek, and then strips him down and changes his diaper, as he thinks he would go anywhere Paul told him he needed to go with both of his children for a normal life, but Carly being the only thing that made his life normal.

After changing Madison, Marshall’s holds tightly to his son’s sleeping body whispering how much he loves him and kissing his cheeks and forehead several times, enjoying that warm secure feeling, before forcing himself to place him in the crib and kissing him good bye for his own good.

Marshall slowly leaves his son’s room and slowly walks into Carly’s bedroom and stares down at her sleeping soundly, exactly where he left her, and carefully sits down on the bed beside her, wanting to choke her for keeping Madison from him, but thinking of how normal Madison’s life would be if he were to get up right now and leave.

“Whada do . . .  do I leave right now . . . . just be happy that I got this . . . . He’ll have a normal life if I stay away . . . . he’ll hate me . . . . . . like I hate my father for not being around . . . . . . . . you don’t know how to hate . . . you gave our son life . . . . You’re a very compassionate woman . . . you’ll show him compassion . . . . . please . . . . .  I don’t want him to hate me . . . . I beg for a Second Chance, even though I don’t deserve one for the things I’ve put you through . . . . . my second chance was the morning I woke up looking into your beautiful eyes and that annoying music.” Marshall whispers, but suddenly stops, as Carly’s eyes open and connects with his.

“I Love You  . . . Please tell Madison that I love him . . . .” Marshall struggles to say, as he tries to find the strength in his legs to stand, but stops noticing the petrified look in Carly eyes as she realizes what’s going on and moves up against the headboard totally petrified.

“Please don’t be scared. Madison is asleep . . . in his room” Marshall struggles to fine his voice to say, as Carly quickly tries to leave the room, and he grabs her and holds tightly to her wrist before she can make it off the bed.

“Please . . . . . . . I’m leaving . . . .” Marshall sincerely pleads as he fights against Carly struggling to get up.

“I’m leaving!” Marshall firmly states again as he finally maneuvers his body over her small one, holding her arms tightly between them, as she cries uncontrollably.

“Sssshhhh . . . .  please don’t cry. I Love You.” Marshall sincerely pleads in a whisper, hating to see the woman he truly loves cry, but quickly comes to the realization at how many times he’s been the reason for the tears.

“I’m sorry . . . . . I love You.” Marshall whispers with all his heart body and soul, and slowly passionately placing a simple kiss on her sweet lips before slowly lifting up, and her frantically rushing from the room.

Marshall collects his thoughts and leaves the room, glancing at the nursery to see Carly-cuddling Madison in her arms, and with the memory of that warm secure feeling of holding them both in his arms etched in his mind and heart he quietly leaves, knowing they’re both better off without him.
